How to make use of default values

A default value is a value that has been specified to display in a field when a new record is added to a module or a new search is begun.

To define default values:

1. Open the module in which you wish to set default values.
2. To specify values to display by default in New mode, click New Record (CTRL+N) to change to New mode

   -OR-

   To specify values to display by default in Search mode, remain in Search mode.

   Note: With the introduction of Unicode Support in EMu 5.0 onwards, special characters used in search terms (and therefore default search values) must be escaped. For example, "Person" in EMu 4.3 and becomes \"Person\" in EMu 5.0 onwards. See Search for full details.

3. Enter the default values in the fields in which they will display:

   

4. Select Edit>Default Values>Set As Defaults from the Menu bar to display the Defaults Properties box:

   

5. Enter a descriptive name for this set of default values in the top text field.
6. Click OK.
7. Select Edit>Default Values>Change from the Menu bar to display the Defaults box.
8. Select the name of the defaults just saved.
9. Click OK.

   The selected set of defaults will now display when you are in the same mode in which the defaults were created.

   Note: The System Administrator can also set default values in the Registry module.

In the module with the set of default values you wish to modify:

1. Select Edit>Default Values>Change from the Menu bar to display the Defaults box.
2. Select the name of the set of Defaults to be modified (Party Defaults in the example above) and click the Properties button

   -OR-

   Right-click the name of the set of Defaults and select Properties from the menu that displays.

   The Defaults Properties box displays. The fields that have a default value are listed in the Defaults list:

   

3. To add a field to the Defaults list, select a field in the Fields list and click Add

   -OR-

   To change the value in an existing default field, select a field in the Defaults list.

4. Click Set to display the Set Default Value box:

   

   Note: If you added a field to the Defaults list, it will be empty. If you selected a field from the Defaults list, the current default value will display.

5. Enter a default value in the field

   -OR-

   Click Load to load the value in the current record.

   Note: The Load button can be used in Search or Display mode. In Search mode you would enter search values in fields before performing Step 1. In Display mode you would first search for or create the record with the required default values.

6. When all default values are correct, click OK to close the Defaults Properties box.
7. Click OK to close the Defaults box.

To select which set of default values to use:

1. Open the module in which the default values will apply.
2. To specify values to display by default in New mode, click New Record (CTRL+N) to change to New mode

   -OR-

   To specify values to display by default in Search mode, remain in Search mode.

3. Select Edit>Default Values>Change from the Menu bar to display the Defaults box.
4. Select the name of the defaults set that you wish to apply.
5. Click OK.

   The selected set of defaults will now display when you are in the same mode in which the defaults were created.

If you have overwritten the default values and want to reload them, select Edit>Default Values>Load from the Menu bar.
