What's new in the EMu Help

Amendment to the example VB code to ensure that 64bit DSNs are used when a user has a 64bit version of Office installed; otherwise 32bit DSNs are used.

Update to XML / XSL code examples. Previously, when creating a Page View and configuring an import using the Import Tool, encoding was specified as encoding="iso-8859-1"; with EMu's support for Unicode, encoding must now be specified as encoding="UTF-8".

Added dynamic scroll-to-top feature.

A couple of usability features added to the Help:

• The Header bar (containing the main menu and search bar) is now fixed and remains in view when scrolling through a page's content.
• A [Close] option has been added to the bottom of all Drop downs.

Explanation for why a NOT search does not return records that have no value in the searched field (and how to work around this).

New features include:

• Support to allow dragging multiple multimedia files to any (non-Multimedia) module Multimedia tab. A new Multimedia record is automatically created and attached for each dropped file. See Drag and drop media files to create new Multimedia records for details.
• A new Thumbnail|Quality Registry entry specifies the compression quality of thumbnails generated when adding images to the Multimedia module.

EMu's Reporting subsystem was modified in order to bypass some filtering which occurs when a Crystal Report or Microsoft report (Excel, Word, etc.) is generated out of EMu. Bypassing the filtering improves report generation and performance.

Updated. The introduction of full Unicode support with EMu 5.0 affects the use of wildcard characters when searching. Currently it is NOT necessary to escape wildcards in a Global Replace.

Full Unicode support was introduced with EMu 5.0. The impact of Unicode support is felt most when searching, which is greatly enhanced. The Search section of the Help has been updated with details of how searches are performed in EMu 5.0 onwards.

Detailed documentation about the Texpress configuration subsystem and tools for achieving optimal indexing of database tables.

Includes details about:

• The params file used for storing configuration settings.
• texanalyse, texdensity, texconf.

EMu 5.0 includes a new Tools>Move menu option for Events modules that use the Exhibition Objects extensions. Objects selected in the Objects Associated With Event table of the Objects tab can be moved to another event; associated Exhibition Objects records are simultaneously updated.

EMu 4.2 has seen the introduction of a number of extensions that provide a more flexible mechanism for displaying and altering data within a single language:

• When the All Languages option is selected, users may now select the order in which languages are displayed (but not, it is important to keep in mind, the order in which language data is stored in EMu, which is defined by the Supported Registry entry). This allows users who are dominant in a particular language to display this language first with other languages following.
• User may now alter data while a single language is displayed. Any data entered into a field will only update the value of the language selected.
• When displaying data in a single language and a value does not exist for a given field, the value of the first filled language may be displayed. The text is shown in a user selectable colour (grey by default) to indicate that it is not associated with the current language. When the field is entered, the text is removed, allowing data to be entered.
• A number of data entry helpers always display all languages in the user defined order to assist data entry. For example, if a Lookup List is displayed, all languages are always shown so that users may select the correct entry based on context. This is particularly important where one term in a given language has multiple terms in another language.

  Many changes introduced to the Help to accommodate the new Language facilities, including a new section - Support for languages.

To reduce the nightly system maintenance and to allow the Lookup List table to be used as a regular module, EMu 4.1 has added a background service that ensures the Lookup List entries are always in sync with the records in the EMu system. The addition of the service removes the need to rebuild the Lookup Lists on a nightly basis, hence reducing system maintenance time.

Furthermore, as the Lookup List table is no longer reloaded, the Lookup List module has been extended to include support for attributed notes (Notes tab) and multimedia (Multimedia tab). Audit trails on individual records are now maintained and Record Level Security may be used as for any other module.

Although a Lookup List rebuild program is still provided, it now applies changes to the eluts table rather than rebuilding the table completely. The introduction of the Lookup List service means that rebuilds are only required if the Lookup List table becomes corrupted, or if users accidentally delete records that are still in use.

Archives tab functionality is sufficient for viewing the structure of an Archive hierarchy for the current record, but it does not provide a simple mechanism for relocating other records within the hierarchy (i.e. records other than the current record), nor does it allow the hierarchy to be restructured easily. In order to address these two shortcomings and provide a constant visual reminder of the archive hierarchy, EMu 4.1 introduces the Archive View facility.

New Registry entry specifies whether a column can / cannot be included in a report.

Introduced with EMu 4.1, the After Export facility allows a command to be executed once an export has completed. Amongst other things, the command can:

• Email the export files to a list of users.
• Email the results of the export to a list of users.
• Copy the export files to another machine behind a secure firewall.
• Copy the export files over the internet via a secure transfer mechanism.
• Send an SMS to a list of telephone numbers.

Addition of the AutoWriteIgnore permission, combining the AutoWrite and WriteIgnore permissions.

New Indexing Registry setting that sets the unique attribute for one or more columns in a table. The Unique Index setting is available from EMu 4.1 onwards.

In certain modules it is now possible to create an attachment record from the current record using the Tools>New menu. From the:

• Events module it is possible to create a Loans record
• Events module it is possible to create a Conservation record
• Loans module it is possible to create a Movements record
• Loans module it is possible to create a Conservation record
• Movements module it is possible to create a Conservation record
• Traps module it is possible to create a Trap Events record

Replaces the Exhibit Items module.

The Exhibition Objects module is intended for Art based EMu clients. The module holds details about a particular object at a particular event, and includes:

• Exhibition information, e.g. the location of the object within the exhibition.
• Maintenance information, e.g. does the object need to be replaced or does it have any special requirements while the exhibition is under way.

  The Exhibition Objects module sits between the Events and Catalogue modules and holds details about an object that is associated with an event.

  When an object is attached to an Events record, an Exhibition Objects record is automatically created. Removing an object from an event deletes the associated Exhibition Objects record.

EMu 4.0.03 introduces multi-group support, which allows a single user to be registered in more than one group:

• A user who is a member of more than one group can select the group name to use from the Login dialogue box when logging into EMu.
• At any time it is possible to switch to another group without logging out and back in again.
• When switching groups the user decides whether opened modules should remain open or whether they should be closed.
• Any new modules opened will use the group permissions assigned to the group that the user switched to.

EMu 4.0.02 introduces a new facility that enables data to be exported on a regular basis. Users can define:

• A set of fields for export.
• A sort order for the exported records.
• A TexQL statement to determine which records to export.
• Dates on which the export is to occur.

The ShowTreeChildren Registry entry specifies the number of levels to display below the current node in a hierarchy on the Hierarchy tab of the Taxonomy module.

Details about using the Import tool to append data to tables and nested tables of values.

The Multimedia Audio/Video|Exclude Registry entry has been removed from EMu.

Clarification.

Two new Registry entries allowing the resolution of generated images to be specified.

Updated. Unique Registry entry has been extended to apply to nested and double nested tables.

Details about the Archives Registry entry added. This entry specifies that the Make the current record a child of the selected record and Move the current record above the selected record buttons display on the Archives tab of the Catalogue module.

Details about the Statistics facility (introduced with EMu 4.0.01). This facility allows statistical information to be generated on a regular basis (hourly, daily, weekly or monthly) and stored in the Statistics module for later use.

Details of a new Registry entry that enforces a strict comparison of terms entered into a Lookup List.

The Copy Special utility allows you to specify what character(s) or notation should be used at the end of a paragraph or row when copying records in List View and pasting them into another application.

Narratives content overhauled to include comprehensive documentation about how to use the module, in particular with a view to using it as the content management system for a website.

Clarification about the Record Updates options.

Restructure of the Working with EMu records section with the addition of a new section Tools for Adding and Updating Records that brings together Default Values, Ditto, Import and Record Templates.

EMu 4.0.01 has added XSLT processing as part of the Import tool for XML files: it is now possible to import an XML file and have it transformed as part of the Import process.

All Context IDs for topics in this Help with a number < 500100 have been changed. This affects approximately 60 topics and is only an issue if you have used EMu's Related Information function to link the EMu client to an affected topic in this Help.

Details about the extension to the Audit Trails functionality, allowing the current version of a record to be "replaced" by an earlier version of a record.
